Instructions for use
- Obtain a urine sample ideally 4-6hours following suspected paraquat exposure.
- Put 10mL of urine into a clear container, add 2g sodium bicarbonate (Sachet A) and shake gently. Add 1g sodium dithionite (Sachet B). Allow effervescence to subside, then shake again. Once mixture settled, view against a white background.
- A blue or greenish grey colour shows paraquat is present (as per below).
Rationale
Paraquat test kits are strongly advised to be stocked in all facilities. Unintentional paraquat exposures are common – but significant exposures are rare. Lower risk exposures with a negative urinary dithionite test do not need further treatment. Having this test available can prevent unnecessary transfer.
